»» Things To Do in Venice in Autumn: Venicemarathon

The most scenic Marathon is taking place the last Sunday of October in Venice.

The race starts in Stra, a small town a few kilometers east of Padua, runs through the small towns of the Brenta Riviera, enters the city and overpasses 14 Venetian bridges. Riva dei Sette Martiri, Venice’s picturesque waterfront, is where the race ends (see the race course map).

Also a non competitive run — the “Family Run” — is scheduled in the week-end of the Venice Marathon; it is open to school-aged children, their families, and everyone that looks for a  chance to experience the huge Venicemarathon sport event in first person and to live the city in a different way. It is scheduled for Saturday, October 24; start time is at 10 a.m.

The first Sunday of October Venice hosts the Race of the Lighthouse marathon.

Also known as “La Corsa Dei Fari“, this marathon consists of two races measuring 21km and 10km respectively. You can opt to run the whole distance — 31km — or alternatively choosing one between two routes.

The marathon starts and finishes in Venice Lido area, featuring a pleasant route along the sea and the lagoon.

The first Sunday of September Venice hosts the Historic Regatta.
Beautifully-crafted 13th-century boats fill the Canal Grande.

The races start at 5.10PM. Boat parades, art displays, music and many celebrations entertain the visitors before and after the races.

Vogalonga boat race is a major event for Venice. It is much more than a boat race, it is a an act of love by Venetians for their lagoon.

The route of Vogalonga, stretches approximately for 20 km (18 miles) across Venice Lagoon.
It starts from St Mark’s Basin, leads the the Lagoon islands, with Burano at halfway. After reaching Venice, the boats go through the Cannaregio Canal, reach the Grand Canal and, finally, they pass the finish line located at the Punta della Dogana, opposite St. Mark’s Square.

Vogalonga brings together rowing crews from all over the world.
A so genuinely popular and traditional event is definitely not to be missed if you happen to visit Venice late May.
