»» Rome day trip ideas: Assisi

Assisi is one of the favorite destinations for day trips from Rome or Florence. The tranquil Umbrian town is an ideal destination for visitors after experiencing the bustle of metropolitan areas such Rome or Florence.

However, even though a lot of people take day trips to Assisi from Rome or Florence, it’s strongly recommended you stay at least one night in Assisi. There is so much more to see than the Basilica of S.francesco there.

- Getting from Rome/or Florence to Assisi
Trains from Rome or Florence are frequent and some are direct while some will require a change (in Foligno, the trains from Rome; in Terontola the trains from Florence).  It takes at least 2 hours for a one way trip there (see timetables at trenitalia.it).
Keep in mind that the train station is not in Assisi itself but in nearby Santa Maria Degli Angeli. So, once in  Santa Maria Degli Angeli (Assisi station) you can get a bus from the station up to Assisi. There are indeed buses that can take you to the Basilica of S.Francesco; a 60min ticket is €0.90.
