The medieval town of Gubbio, in Umbria, is hosting the Festa dei Ceri, on May 15. This festival is an event unique, drawing in Gubbio crowds from all over the world.
For those who are visiting Umbria this period, it is an event not to be missed.
The climax of the festival, is the Corsa dei Ceri — the Ceri race. Basically, three teams of 18-20 fit men race three heavy wooden statues (the Ceri) representing three saints of the city on palanques up through the city to the cathedral on top of Mt. Ingino.
The ritual race is surrounded by an incredible festive spirit, and the various trappings, decorations and ceremonies are full of life.
