»» Fly & Drive to Rome: Pros and Cons
An American Tour Operator offering Fly and Drive packages to Italy, stresses how the vacationers could improve their holiday experience in Rome by taking advantage of car rental options.
I agree in part. While I think by driving a car gives you the flexibility and freedom to explore several destinations not well connected by public transportations, driving in Rome could make your holidays worse.
Driving in the streets of Rome, as well as in any other large Italian city, provide foreigner people with hassles and headache.
So, when the Tour Operator ‘Virgin Vacations’, says: “….enjoy the flexibility and freedom to explore all of the sites throughout the legendary city and surrounding areas by taking to the friendly streets of Rome by car.”, I don’t agree.
However, I agree to the following: “…Many vacationers have learned that a day trip to Pisa or one of the quaint towns that surround Rome can help punctuate a Rome vacation.” (see source)
From Rome, you could plan several day trips to destinations such as, Umbria, Tuscany countryside, and many other not so well connected by rail.
So basically, consider car rental in your package to Rome, just if you think day trips will be a part important of your vacations there.
