The Tour of Italy we suggest this week includes visits to most important Sanctuaries of Italy.
Not religious tourism only but a occasion to discover the best of art, history, and traditions of most part of Italy by visiting lands of saints and capitals of Catholic cult.
Visits are planned from to south to north of the country, a few examples: in Umbria to the Sanctuary of Santa Rita (Cascia), Basilica of S.Francesco (Assisi); in Veneto to the St. Anthony Basilica (Padua); to the great Basilica in Loreto ant the home of the Holy Family of Nazareth; in Apulia to the town of the recently beatified Padre Pio da Pietralcina.
The Itinerary
Day 1: ROME
Arrival in Rome, visit of the historical centre: Piazza del Popolo, Piazza di Spagna, Piazza Navona, Fontana di Trevi, Pantheon. Welcome dinner.
Day 2: FERENTILLO - CASCIA - NORCIA – PRECI
Visit of the Mummy Museum and San Pietro in Valle Abbey at Ferentillo. In Cascia visit to the Sanctuary of Santa Rita and Roccaporena. Continuation to Norcia, well known for culinary tradition (truffles and norcini). Taste its typical products. Visit of the medieval burgh of Preci. Dinner in a typical restaurant.
Day 3: SPOLETO – ASSISI
Visit of Spoleto. Tour of Assisi: San Francesco Basilica, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria degli Angeli with the famous Cappella della Porziuncola, the Convento di San Damiano. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 4: RAVENNA – POMPOSA
Tour of Ravenna possessing the world’s most glorious concentration of Early Christian and Byzantine mosaics. On the way to Padua, visit to the Abbey of Pomposa, founded in the 6th century. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 5: VENICE
Morning tour of Venice. Afternoon at leisure or optional visit of the Ghetto with its synagogues. Dinner in a typical restaurant.
Day 6: PADUA
Morning visit of the St. Anthony Basilica, one among the most famous sanctuaries of the world. Afternoon transfer to Loreto. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 7: LORETO – LANCIANO
Visit the great Basilica in Loreto ant the home of the Holy Family of Nazareth. Proceed to Lanciano to see the relics of the Host and wine turned into flesh and blood in the 8th century and preserved in the Church of St. Francis. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 8: SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO
Full day in the town of the recently beatified Padre Pio da Pietrelcina. Visit of the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie where he is buried and of the Capuchin monastery where he lived and received the stigmata. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 9: MONTECASSINO – ROME
Morning proceed to Montecassino to visit Europe’s most famous Benedictine Abbey, founded about the year 529 a.C. by St.Benedict. Repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt in the course of its long history, the Abbey has now been completely restored to its former splendour. Farewell dinner.
Day 10: ROME
Time at leisure and departure.
