Suggested tour in Italy: the Volcanoes of Southern Italy.

Day 1: NAPLES
Arrival in Naples, sightseeing tour: Castel dell’Ovo, Castel Nuovo, Galleria Umberto, San Carlo theatre and the Cathedral. Welcome dinner.

Day 2: POMPEI AND MOUNT VESUVIUS
Visit of the luxurious villas and temples, theatre and forum of Pompei, destroyed in AD 79 by the Vesuvius eruption. Excursion to the volcano. Dinner in a typical restaurant.

Day 3: POSITANO, RAVELLO AND AMALFI
In Ravello visit at the Villa Rufolo, where Richard Wagner found the inspiration for the Parsifal. Then on to Amalfi, one of the four sea faring Republics in Italy. Visit Piazza del Duomo with its 9th century cathedral. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 4: NAPLES - CATANIA
Morning at leisure. Late in the afternoon departure to Catania by ferry boat. Dinner on own. Overnight on board.

Day 5: TAORMINA AND ALCANTARA GORGES
Arrival at Catania port. Transfer to Taormina and city. Excursion to the Alcantara Gorges, so called because of the great bridge built over it by the Romans. Possibility of wading up the river. Dinner in a typical restaurant.

Day 6: BOAT TOUR OF VULCANO
Tour of Vulcano Island, including stop at the Grotta del Cavallo with time for swimming in the Pool of Venus. Then on to Gelso, a small fishing village. On to Sirenetta and then back to the port. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 7: ETNA
Excursion to Etna Mount, the highest active volcano in Europe, with its four craters at the summit and 260 volcanic cones. Optional climb up to 2900 mt by jeep and alpine guide. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 8: PANAREA AND STROMBOLI
In the morning visit of Panarea, the smallest island of the archipelago. In the afternoon Stromboli, an almost entirely mountainous volcano, passing by Basiluzzo, Spinazzola and the fishing village of Ginostra. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 9: SIRACUSA
Excursion to Siracusa: Greek Theatre, Orecchio di Dionisio, the Greek Roman amphitheatre. Short visit to the historic centre of the small island of Ortigia: its cathedral, the Aretusa fountain and the Manice castle built by Federico II. Farewell dinner.

Day 10: TAORMINA - CATANIA
Transfer to Catania airport.
