Abruzzo, the land of famous poet D’Annunzio, offers to visitors in a small space a extraordinary variety of landscape and climate. In a few kilometres one can jump from the high mountains (the highest mountains of Appenines chain, with 2914mt of Gran Sasso d'Italia) to the Adriatic coastline.
The territory of Abruzzo is mainly mountainous (65.%) and the remaining part  is constituted by hills. There is a large plain inland, the Piana del Fucino, but is artificial because it was the result of the drying up of the lake Fucino in the last century.

Cities

-L’Aquila: capital of region is one of the highest towns in Italy, its province  is totally characterized by mountains. Founded in the 12th c and according a legend was originally made up of 99 different quarters, which are symbolised in the famous Fontana delle 99 Canelle (‘fountain of 99 spouts’). -Pescara: the most important city for trade and industry in the region; it is a lively modern city adorned by wonderful beaches. Historical monuments worthy of interest include the house of Gabriele D’Annunzio and the Museo delle Genti d’Abruzzo. -
-Sulmona:Old town worldwide famous for its "confetti".  It was an important Roman municipality and was the birthplace of the poet Ovid in 43 bc.  Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture blend to form a harmonious whole. Interesting sights include the Palace (with the Civic Museum inside), the Romanesque Cathedral of San Panfilo and the Aqueduct (1256).

Abruzzo famous for the variety of landscape, but well-known as "Region of Parks". National and Regional parks, State and Regional natural reserves and WWF oasi.  Most famous park is The National Park of Abruzzo inhabited by bears, chamois, wolves (40 wolves living in the Park), deer. The symbol of the Park is the Marsican Brown Bear, which representes an endangered species.
Sea: The coastline of Abruzzo is varied,  low and sandy shores to the north contrast with the inclined shores to the south.

Appeciated seaside resorts throughout the region; in the province of Teramo, from Martinsicuro to Silvi, the Pescara and the Francavilla al Mare beaches, offer high level accomodation, discoteques, and in Pescara itself, even a modern marina. From Ortona to Vasto and as far as S. Salvo to the south are well equipped too for a pleasant holiday.
During the winter, the Abruzzo mountains offer  snow-lovers numerous possibilities for winter sports.  The highest number of winter resorts are in the L'Aquila province
